It's a bit of fun, brings the sea to me in Malvern (100 miles from the coast), and it works without a hitch: does exactly what it is supposed to do. Thanks!

This reviewer listened to Elsewhere using Phillips inner ear, bass enhancing earphones. This reviewer bought the app at its discounted price on 9th June 2012. The app's native volume was set at about 50%; the Macbook's native volume was set at 4-5 bars out of 16.

If you're looking for a very simple app that gives you ambient background noise, this may be an option for you. Interestingly enough, changing between the tracks detailed below seems to activate new sounds, giving each track a wide range of combinations.
Once installed, you'll have a small cocktail drink icon appear on your top menu bar. Clicking this will present you with 3 ambient environment options: beach, forest and city. Each track has two states: daytime and nighttime, which switches based on the machine's internal clock, however, you can also manually change it to whichever you prefer.
I am a dedicated fan of the Naturespace app for iPhone and decided to download the Elsewhere app for my Macbook. While Naturespace delivers a deeper, more realistic holographic sound (which is pretty incredible - but you do pay for the extra effort!), the Elsewhere app reminds me of the sort of ambient sound I'm used to hearing on my Nintendo DS (in 100 Classic Books, you're given a range of ambient sounds to listen to while you read). It is stereo for sure, but unsubtle. Elsewhere is a good application for delivering ambient sound for sure (and I do use it), but it's not the high quality my ears have been been spoiled with by Naturespace and their high standard holographic audio.
Elsewhere, as it does the job when it comes to wanting to zone out everyday sounds when I'm working, but it's not a specialist audio app, in my opinion.

TRACK DESCRIPTIONS

1) BEACH
-----
Daytime - Gentle lowtide waves crash on an otherwise empty beach. You'll hear occassional seagulls. The birds aren't terribly close by, but they're about. I think this soundtrack would go well if you have some kind of beach view desktop wallpaper. Other sounds enter the stage: dolphins chitter away, and the sound of a pebble splooshing into the water alerts you every now and then.
Nighttime - curious sounds. Initially it sounds as though you've just 'driven' up to the beach and stopped moving. Then there is an odd rocking sound, as though you're in some kind of hammock, slowly swinging. I think this can be very soothing if you have eyes closed, but with inner-ear earphones, this is a little jarring. There are no seagulls (perfect). The water is a little further away as well. I wonder if this could be made better with the addition of crickets very faintly in the distance or some other leafy ambient sound that would indicate more of an outdoors feel in the dark.
RATING: 4/5 - some sounds are odd but the waves are divine.

2) FOREST

Daytime - A warmer sound, with a deeper 'windy' ambience that could be mistaken for distant traffic roar, and every now and then a whispier 'wind in the trees' that sounds more like an impending hurricane than a gentle breeze. This doesn't last long. Sweet small birds chirp away in the distance while an annoying buzzing bee will hover near your ear; there's a woodpecker or two and a jarring crow's caw occassionally. The audio holographic sound isn't as good as in other apps, so you don't get much of a sense of 'left / right', or even 'up / down'. This is a track that should be listened to quite low because of the deepness of the background noise and the sudden loudness of some of the birds. I didn't need it much higher than 4 or 5 bars (there are 16 bars on a Mac's volume level).
Nighttime: Twigs snap under the weight of something unseen in the forest, but you're not afraid. Crickets and other insects come alive and the ambient roar from before gives way to a crisper sound under a starlit night. It's soothing and is a cooling sound that calms, not nearly as busy as the daytime sound. Once you go higher than 5 bars, you can hear the soft warmth of a fire that fades in and out at odd intervals. This could be by the side of a still lake or pond though no water is evident, and off in the distance one can hear the gentle sway of the tree tops.
RATING: 3/5 - some birds are too loud but otherwise interesting. Soothing but unsubtle.

3) CITY

Daytime: Distinctly lacking in human voices, there are instead shuffles and other sounds of human movement that disturb the constant warm roar of this track. You could be inside a room, with glass windows overlooking a busy street. But then the sound of a dog barking in the distance opens up the space. So is the ambient sound air conditioning? A police siren wails and car horns honk; pigeons take flight and coo to each other. Alright, outside a cafe in the city then? Switching between tracks and returning to this one highlights the sound of passing traffic - indeed, every now and then there is a car that zooms by at 30mph. There's no one to lsiten to and yet plenty of strangers around you going by, on a bike, in a car or just sipping a latte at their table nearby.
Nighttime: someone closes the door to their car and drive off. You're left standing outside, the faint chirrup of crickets. A dog barks at something somewhere not too far and though the traffic is definitely sparcer, you can still make out the sound of cars rolling by. A siren goes by - should you be standing around? It's alright. It's quiet, and this could be your balcony at your city apartment. Just you and the calm sounds of a city pulsing with life, even as it sleeps.
RATING: 5/5 - soothing and familiar, especially night track.
